It was Mimi Tang's son who first convinced her she needed a Web page to promote the Richmond, B.C., branch of Imperial Financial Services, where she is centre manager.
"Everyone was on the Web so we also had to have a presence there," says Brian Tang, who works as Imperial's marketing assistant while completing the chartered financial analyst program. He designed the page about a year ago and listed it with as many search engines as he could.
The site has had about 900 visitors, says Ms. Tang, but many are from outside the province or country and so far it has not generated new business. Instead she views it as an educational tool for clients. By keeping the site updated with investment advice and commentary, Tang finds she gets fewer phone calls from worried customers. "In the '87 downturn, I would get phone calls to my home, my office," she says. "Now, I hardly get any phone calls (from anxious clients) at all."
Like an increasing number of advisors in the financial services sector, Tang sees the Web as a business tool that will become more valuable as its interactive capabilities allow her clients to access information with the use of a password and, eventually, perform transactions.
Tang is so confident she has now hired a professional Web designer to revamp the site and give it a memorable domain name to replace the existing numeric moniker, which is complicated and nonsensical. The initial cost for the professionally built Web site will be $2,500, she says, but time will continue to be the main investment.
