Whole life policies extend the cost of insurance over a longer period of time (in this case, over your entire life). To level out the otherwise increasing cost of insurance, especially during the early years, your excess premiums are invested in the life insurance company's general portfolio. Because you are not personally managing the investment, your choice of life insurance company is critical. The premium payments are inflexible and could become a burden if you lose your job or your cash flow decreases.
